Forest Operations is the glue that draws together and connects other disciplines within forestry. It builds upon and fuses knowledge of all subjects, bringing theoretical silvicultural systems to fruition, and scaling harvest planning and analysis from the individual stand to regional and national wood supply and energy logistics.

The University of Idaho is a leader in Forest Operations research and education. Over two billion board board feet of timber is harvested annually in the Inland Empire, including eastern Washington and Oregon. The mix of active timber industry, efficient state forest management of over 1 million acres of timberland, active restoration on national forests and conservation land, and small private forestry make north Idaho the ideal location for the Forest Operations Research Lab.
